Abstract
This study aimed to describe the lived experiences of caring for self to prevent infection among patients with leukemia undergoing chemotherapy during the COVID-19 pandemic. Descriptive phenomenology qualitative approach was used with twelve participants who had leukemia and were undergoing chemotherapy during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data were collected using in-depth individual interviews. Data were analyzed using the Colaizzi method.
The findings revealed 5 main points of the lived experiences of caring for self to prevent infection among patients with leukemia undergoing chemotherapy during the COVID-19 pandemic. These were (1) careful and strict self-care, (2) life under protective measures against Covid-19 is difficult, (3) protective measures against Covid-19 make life safe, (4) receiving advice and encouragement from other people, and (5) understanding life and claming down.
The findings of this study provide understanding of the lived experiences of caring for self to prevent infection among patients with leukemia undergoing chemotherapy during the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings can be used to design nursing intervention to support caring for self to prevent infection for leukemic patients during the COVID-19 pandemic.
