Abstract

This one-group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental study aimed to examine the effectiveness of transfer tool kit for village health volunteers (VHVs) in helping vulnerable individuals affected by floods. A community-based disaster risk management concept was used as the study framework. Forty VHVs working in repeated by flooded areas in Hat Yai municipality were purposively recruited. Small groups 4-10 of participants were trained and given practice in the assessment of readiness of the vulnerable individuals before transferring, assessment of health status of the VHV who was going to transfer the vulnerable individuals, and the correct methods of safe transfer. The effectiveness of using this transfer tool kit was measured in 2 dimensions outcomes and process. The outcomes were measured by knowledge, transferring skill, and torso angle of the VHVs, whereas the process was measured by the possibility of the VHVs to apply this transfer tool kit. The content validity of the transfer tool kit was examined by 3 experts. The reliabilities of the outcomes measurements were as follows: 1) the internal consistency of the Knowledge Questionnaire yielded a correlation coefficient analyzed by a Kuder-Richardson 20 of 80, 2) the intra-rater reliability of the Transferring Skill Record yielded a Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 1.0, 3) the intra-rater agreement of the Lifting Torso Angle was .78, and 4) the internal consistency of the Possibility of Using Transfer Tool Kit Questionnaire yielded a Cronbach's alpha coefficient of .89. Demographic were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the hypotheses were examined using Wlicoxon signed ranks test. The result showed that: 1. The mean rank of knowledge score after training was significantly higher than that before training (p < 001). higher than that before training (p < .001). that before training (p < .001). (M = 3.84, SD = 47). 2. The mean rank of transferring skill score after training was significantly 3. The torso angle after training was significantly decreased compared with 4. The possibility of using the transfer tool kit was at high level This study revealed that applying transfer tool kit in helping vulnerables individual increased the knowledge and skill of the VHVs, and decreased the torso angle of lifting of the VHVs. Therefore, nurses are recommended to train and encourage VHVs to use the transfer tool kit during transferring vulnerable individual in order to protect low back injury.
