Abstract

Abstract

This research is a quasi-experimental study in a single group with repeated measures. The purpose of this study was to investigate the self-efficacy enhancement program on the capability of trauma patient care at the scene and during transfer by emergency medical technician. The sample was purposively selected from emergency medical technicians which were under the responsibility of Songkhla Provincial Health Office, Songkhla province. A total of 30 emergency medical technicians were willing to participate in the self-efficacy enhancement program on the capability of trauma patient care at the scene and during transfer. The program was developed based on the concept of self-efficacy by Bandura and integrated with the guidelines for resuscitation of pre-hospital trauma life support of the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians and the American College of Surgeons based on the competency and scope of the emergency medical staff. The self-efficacy enhancement program on the capability of trauma patient care at the scene and during transfer included attending the lecture with slide presentation, videos, role play, and practicing on the pre-hospital trauma patient care under supervision of the experts. The data were collected using a questionnaire related to the knowledge of trauma patient care at the scene and during transfer and the observational checklist tool related to the practice for trauma patient care. The content validity of the questionnaire was tested by three experts, and had the value of .92, and the reliability was tested by test-retest, yielding a value of .77. The content validity of the observational checklist tool was tested and had a value of 1, and the reliability was tested by inter-rater between the researcher and an expert, yielding a value of 1. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired t-test. The results showed that after receiving the self-efficacy enhancement program, the participants had a significantly higher level of knowledge related to trauma patient care at the scene and during transfer than before receiving the program (t = -8.21, p <.001) and a significantly higher level of practical skills for trauma patient care at the scene and during transfer (t = -19.39, p <.001). The study shows that the self-efficacy enhancement program on capability of trauma patient care at the scene and during transfer can help to increase the ability of emergency medical technicians. As a result, the program should be used as a guideline for enhancing the performance of personnel working in emergency medical services in order to improve care for trauma patients effectively.
