Abstract
Abstract
This research's objectives are to: 1) analyze the problem manifestation and human values in the Thai novel "Pa Karmathep", and 2) analyze the mental picture of forests relating to the novel's theme. By employing literary criticism methods, a finding reveals that the author exhibits three critical human problems through her characters' behaviors. The problems include pride and sexual problems, poverty and ambition, as well as loneliness and the thirst for love. Another finding confirms the author's message in that humans can overcome their problems, purify their minds, and eliminate unacceptable innate characteristics to maintain their human values. Through its characters, two human values are also discovered in this novel, which includes self-control and understanding of the human nature, as well as truth acceptance and the courage to confront life's problems.
Due to the author's use of a figure of speech, the novel contains its special value when its theme is purposely related to forests in order to create a mental picture to the reader. In other words, forests are referred to human experiences and human sexual instincts in this novel.
