Abstract

The purposes of this research are to investigate the evolution and roles of Association of Women for Peace and provide suggestion to promote participation of women in the three border southern provinces. Qualitative research methods were employed. Data were gained from two sources. Firstly, review of relevant literature and previous studies offered secondary data. In addition, in-depth interview, focus group discussion, participant observation, and non-participant observation with 22 participants were conducted. The data were grouped into themes and analyzed to gain insight of the phenomenon. Finally, results were presented through analytical description. Results show that Association of Women for Peace was established among turmoil circumstances in the three border southern provinces, namely Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat. The organization allows women in the areas to share their ideas and participate in various activities to serve their needs. So far, the major tasks processed by the organization could be categorized into three phases: 1) We Wouldn't Leave Each Other with Wounds and Tears, 2) We Are Together to Fight, and 3) The Power of Women for Peace. Its major roles in promoting peace in the areas included 6 aspects. First, the organization performed as a coordinator and leader of networking. In addition, it promotes understanding and develops women's competency as well as solves women's problems in the area. However, the promotion of peace should be processed through peaceful methods from the participation of women. They should be allowed to cooperate in peace promotion in all processes at all levels. The women should gain more understandings and acceptance from the government sectors, the public sectors, religious leaders, and local leaders. As a result, abilities of the women in the areas as well as those of southern people in general would be developed.
